About SICAW

OUR MISSION

The Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare (SICAW) is a non-profit, tax exempt organization founded in 1972. We are Staten Island’s longest operating private rescue group and well-respected in our community.

Our primary mission is the rescue, care and placement of stray and abandoned animals. We are also committed to furthering the public’s education about proper pet care, pet overpopulation and the importance of spaying and neutering. SICAW has established its own low cost spay/neuter program, Neuter Network, in partnership with several local Veterinarians. As part of this program, spay/neuter services can be performed by qualified vets for a lower cost.

SICAW is 100% volunteer driven, and funded by generous public donations. Volunteers rescue animals, foster animals, and perform a host of other functions. Donations are used for animal care, medical services, advertising, and administrative costs.

We believe in a NO KILL NATION so our goal is to find homes for all animals in our care, regardless of age or health. Euthanasia is a last resort – and only when we’ve exhausted all other medical treatments.

OUR BOARD OF GOVERNORS

The Board of Governors of the Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare is comprised of dedicated and caring individuals who are actively engaged in:

  • ​Adoptions: screening, home visits, events and marketing

  • ​​Transporting animals: for medical visits, boarding and adoption events

  • ​Fundraising: attending newsletter and raffle mailings, fairs, yard sales, literature distribution and food service

  • ​​Education: informing the public on animal welfare and best practices.

Board Members are not paid and serve on a voluntary basis. The only compensation received is reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses, related to the organization’s mission.
